Lock: Lisa Conta Interview

Lisa Conta’s smooth vocals perfectly accent her R&B laced sound. Her new song “Difficult” is dripping with confidence, but her strength is finding those moments of vulnerability. You can sense the influence of the classics but she keeps it modern with the hypnotic production. We caught up with Lisa to chat about her new song, her influences, and how her modeling and music careers intertwine.

Hi Lisa, how did you get started in music?

Lisa: Music has always been a big part of my life for as long as I can remember. I was probably around 5 years old when I knew I wanted to be an artist and I’ would sing every time I had a chance. At the age of 10, I started in a choir school in Stockholm called Adolf Fredriks music classes.

I love that your first dream was to be in pro-basketball! How did that shift to modeling and music?

Lisa: I wouldn’t call basketball “my dream” but it was a goal! And I’m really proud to have played at such a high level at the age of 16, however, it didn’t really “shift” to music. The music was always there but people didn’t see it because I was working on myself and my vocals at the time. Modeling kinda just happened… it wasn’t planned and it just went really well from day one, it’s something I love doing but music is always gonna be my passion.

Did growing up in a musical family influence you and your sound?

Lisa: It really did! I remember growing up listening to my dad and my grandfather’s Reggae music and I would always sing along to it. I remember thinking this is what I’m gonna do! My dad was the one who showed me how to record on my computer and he’s one of my biggest inspirations.

Who are some of your main musical influences?

Lisa: I would say, my dad, Rihanna, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Usher, Beyoncé, Jason Derulo.

Tell me about your song “Difficult” what’s the story behind it?

Lisa: So to me, “Difficult” means a lot because it reflects on many of my past relationships between friends/ boyfriends/ family. My favorite line from the song is “Why we gotta make it difficult when it could be so easy”, it’s such a simple line but I think many can relate to it. I can’t even begin to mention every time I’ve had a fight with someone over something so tiny… that suddenly turned into this big issue. That’s what the song is about.

How does modeling influence your music? Or music influence your modeling?

Lisa: I think that both modeling and music can be a way of “expressing” yourself. Modeling has definitely given me more things to write about and my music gives me the energy to model. I think fashion and music go hand in hand and they’re both a big part of me.

Lisa: Modeling is as artistic as music because you still have to create a pose, a look for outfits. So I guess you can say that it helps put me in an artistic mental zone. Singing writing or modeling.

What’s your dream collab?

Lisa: That’s a hardddd one, there’s sooo many. But if I have to pick one I have to go with Rihanna. If I could bring someone back to life… it has to be Michael Jackson

What artist has been on heavy rotation for you lately?

Lisa: The last couple of weeks I’ve been listening to a lot of Tiwa Savage! She’s definitely one of my favorite afrobeat artists. I’m loving her latest album, she’s someone I look up to!
