Meet Emily Treadgold of The New Nine in East Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Treadgold.

Emily, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.

I started The New Nine a few years ago, after freelance writing for various music outlets, I found there was a huge lack of female writers. I wanted to create a space for women to write about the bands they love without feeling like they’re too “girly” or feeling like their opinions weren’t valid. I also wanted to put the spotlight on up-and-coming femme artists that might get glossed over from other sites. Currently, we’ve worked with about twenty girls to start their writing careers.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?

Hell no, in the beginning, I had a business partner, and while he was quintessential to starting The New Nine, I feel like it wasn’t completely my vision. I was much younger and didn’t know how to stand up for myself as much. It’s just now starting to take the form of what I want it to be. It’s hard to stay motivated but I love what we’re doing, The other challenge is just time, the blog happens on my off-time and I work a 9-to-5 and waitress on the weekends. I work pretty late into the night and still cover shows and manage writers. My social life is fleeting but it’s worth it.

Please tell us more about your work. What do you guys do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?

We’re known for highlighting women, not just artists, but women in the industry as well. That doesn’t mean it’s all we cover, but we want them up on a pedestal. We put on an SXSW showcase with one of the only femme-focused lineups that year. You’d be surprised how many showcases talk about being feminist but will throw on an all-male act on the bill like there aren’t a billion other things they could be a part of, we want to put womxn first. Honestly, if I named my top ten artists they would all be womxn. I think they’re doing the most in music right now.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?

I feel like I’m someone that gets things done, that and trusting my gut, I can make decisions so quick because I know what I want. I like being dependable. I never flake unless it’s an emergency. If I say I’m covering a show or if a post will be up, it’ll be done. I think that’s just part of my reputation. I also have an incredible e-mail system. People really underestimate how important e-mails are, I think it’s the main part of what I do. It doesn’t sound glamorous but so much of this job is being organized, persistent, and building a good reputation, You want to be the person that people e-mail and say, “I immediately thought of you when this came out.”
